Angels in America
I can just see in my head Dave Steakley and Abe Reybold saying to themselves “well that’s not a surprise”.
I didn’t like Angels in America...
Made me angry that we put so many people through this horrible disease before anyone would take it seriously and fight back. How many amazing human beings died before someone like Elizabeth Taylor put a stake in the ground and said Enough. Why can’t we have empathy for our fellow humans.
I didn’t like that it was loud with actors screaming at each other. It was dark and scary. I know Broadway is crazy about the Angel. I thought she was awkward and ugly. Scene changes were disturbing because they had the crew dressed in black camo and instead of walking out to move a prop they slithered around looking snakelike and evil. There was one woman actor who played the parts of Ethel Rosenberg and a mother as well as a rabbi and a Russian general. When she was female I liked her very much but when she played the male rolls I couldn’t get past her looking like Jeff Sessions.
I am a big huge fan of Nathan Lane. And the fact that he played the part of the much hated Roy Cohn and made it believable is great acting I think. It’s hard to imagine the man who has played so many funny parts as playing evil but he did and well. Andrew Garfield was also brilliant like everyone is saying. It has to be an exhausting play to perform and I can appreciate all the good hard work put in to the individual performances...
The scene changes with lifts coming up from below and multiple sets and turn table use were impressive...even a pillar of fire from stage right.
It was depressing even though I know today that particular disease is no longer a sure death sentence.
First part of the show runs for three and a half hours with 15 minute breaks. You go away for a 2 hour dinner and come back for the last 4 hours. Seven and a half hours is a long time to be depressed. Especially since the play you saw the night before was also depressing. Hope tonight’s play is funny.
Guess I just wasn’t sophisticated enough for this one.
